  HISTORY
Past History
Sixteen Mile House Restaurant is located in Millbrae, CA. and has a colorful and vintage history dating back to the 1800's.

The original building was located at 1200 El Camino Real at Center Street in Millbrae. It was built in 1872 by Juan Sanchez, a member of one of Millbrae's first families. Originally a hotel on the Butterfield Route, it was later acquired by Wells Fargo, whose stages ran from San Francisco to Kansas City.

El Camino Real translated is "The King's Highway", and was the main road connecting most of the Spanish missions along California's coast. A few years later, a shortened road left only 16 miles to San Francisco and the name "16 Mile House" was taken. Other places sprang up and eventually they became known as the "Mile Houses" - one almost every mile, where limited stops were made on the stagecoach runs.

Over the years, the original building was used as a hotel with a parlor and a saloon, and then a general store. The Barbary Coast was running full blast with gamblers and characters of every description frequenting the location. Later on, it became a speakeasy, house of ill fame and a gambling hall, being between Bay Meadows and Tanforan race tracks. Provisions and good water always seemed available and at the time of the San Francisco earthquake and fire in 1906, a small tent city sprang up around the building.

A bronze plaque was placed at the original site in rememberance of the historical place when the building was demolished in 1970.

The preceding has been only a brief resume on the highlights of the 16 Mile House's history. Today we endeavor to bring you a fine table. The preparation of our foods and the quality we know is the best, our quantity more than ample and the end result, we feel you'll agree, is truly FABULOUS CUISINE!
